Overview
The Metolius River is unique in that its source is a series of springs from which
the nearly full grown river emerges. In less than a quarter mile from where the
first springs gush forth water the river flows away with an average volume of
1,500 cfs. The springs are so consistent that the flow seldom if ever exceeds
2,000 cfs and never drops below 1,000 cfs even in the absolute driest of
summer months. In its short thirty mile length the gorgeous Metolius drops over
a thousand feet through picture perfect meadows with mountain views and old
growth Ponderosa Pine forests before entering the drier climate of the
Deschutes River Valley. Although the river is largely revered by anglers, it offers
up consistent and beautiful class II-III whitewater with seventeen nearly
continuous miles from the last bridge over its waters to Lake Billy Chinook. Clear
cold water, fun rapids, migrating bald eagles, and a spectacular setting are what
make this interesting river a special place for boaters to visit.
