Overview

When viewed from downtown Portland, Mt Hood appears as a snowcapped jewel rising above the
city. Its glaciated outline certainly indicates that it is a large mountain, but the average onlooker
really has no concept of its size. Those that make their way to one of Hood’s several ski areas
might start to get some concept of its bulk, but to truly understand the magnitude of this highest
peak in Oregon, one needs to walk all of the way around it, snaking through its many river
valleys, climbing over ridges, and passing beneath its glaciers.  The Timberline Trail provides
the perfect venue for anyone with three days of time and a sense of adventure to make a
pilgrimage around the volcano.
