Overview

The Deschutes River runs approximately 250 miles from its source in th high Cascades to the
Columbia River just upstream of The Dalles, Oregon.  Over its course, the Deschutes cuts
through ancient lava flows while winding through sub alpine forests, high desert, and sagebrush
steppe land.  The last 100 miles of the river run through remote canyons with limited access,
incredible scenery, and some fun whitewater.  It is this lower section that Michelle and I targeted
for a four day canoe trip during September of 2007.  We experienced a truly remarkable river,
missed the worst of the summer's heat, saw relatively few people, and had an incredibly relaxing
journey through the desert canyons of central Oregon's Deschutes River.
